September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Deadlines

If you were injured or made ill from the attacks on 9/11, or the rescue and recovery effort that followed, you need to learn about the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and how it could possibly help you and the deadlines to register that might apply to you.

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, or VCF, was reopened in 2010 when Congress passed and President Obama signed in to law the “James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.”

The law allows 9/11 Responders and Survivors who were injured or became ill or the loved ones of those who has passed due to 9/11 injuries and illnesses to apply for compensation for economic and non-economic (pain and suffering) losses stemming from their physical injuries or illnesses. This includes not only injured and ill Responders to the World Trade Center Site but also the Pentagon and Shanksville sites as well. (Survivors include residents, students and area workers whose health was harmed by the attack at the World Trade Center.)

The deadlines are complicated, so you should learn about the deadlines by going to the Victim Compensation Fund website or download the “Claims Filing Deadlines” document to make sure you understand the deadlines and do not miss a required filing.

In general, for most injured and ill 9/11 Responders and Survivors, you must have completed and submitted a registration with the Victim Compensation Fund by October 3rd, 2013 if you know or should have known that you were injured or became ill as a result of the attacks of September 11th, 2001, before October 3rd 2011.

There are exceptions to this deadline, most notably those injured and ill 9/11 Responders and Survivors who have Cancer and those who have only been recently diagnosed with a 9/11 covered condition. You should review the deadlines document if you have questions.

Cancer

If you are a 9/11 Responder or Survivor who has contracted a covered cancer (the list of Covered Cancers is available on the World Trade Center Health Program website) before October 12th 2012, you have to register with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund by October 12th 2014.

For those 9/11 Responders and Survivors who have contracted Prostate Cancer, the deadline for registering with the VCF in order to file a claim for prostate cancer is October 21, 2015.

You can do that by going to the Victim Compensation Fund website and registering.

Even if you are enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program,
receiving medical monitoring and/or treatment for your 9/11 injury or illness,
YOU STILL NEED TO REGISTER WITH THE VCF.

Even if you filed with the N.Y.S Worker’s Compensation Board or your Pension Board,
YOU STILL NEED TO REGISTER WITH THE VCF.

Even if you enrolled in the WTC Health Registry,
YOU STILL NEED TO REGISTER WITH THE VCF.

If you are uncertain if you are registered or not, you can contact the Victim Compensation Fund at 1-855-885-1555.

There is NO Deadline for the World Trade Center Health Program.

If you have missed the deadline to Register with the Victim Compensation Fund and and have a covered 9/11 illness or injury you can still sign up for the World Trade Center Health Program which was also created by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

The Health Program provides medical monitoring and treatment for 9/11 Responders to not only the World Trade Center but to the Pentagon and the Shanksville PA crash site and medical treatment for injured and ill World Trade Center Responders and has no deadline for signing up. Whether you registered or did not register with the VCF you can still sign up with the World Trade Center Health Program.
