September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Deadlines

If you were injured or made ill from the attacks on 9/11, or the rescue and recovery effort that followed, you need to learn about the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and how it could possibly help you and the deadlines to register that might apply to you.

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, or VCF, was reopened in 2010 when Congress passed and President Obama signed in to law the “James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act” and was extended in 2015 for another five years.

The law allows 9/11 Responders and Survivors who were injured or became ill or the loved ones of those who has passed due to 9/11 injuries and illnesses to apply for compensation for economic and non-economic (pain and suffering) losses stemming from their physical injuries or illnesses. This includes not only injured and ill Responders to the World Trade Center Site but also the Pentagon and Shanksville sites as well. (Survivors include residents, students and area workers whose health was harmed by the attack at the World Trade Center.)

The deadlines are complicated, so you should learn about the deadlines by going to the Victim Compensation Fund website or download the “Claims Filing Deadlines” document to make sure you understand the deadlines and do not miss a required filing.

In general, for most injured and ill 9/11 Responders and Survivors, you must have completed and submitted a registration with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund by October 3rd, 2013 if you know or should have known that you were injured or became ill as a result of the attacks of September 11th, 2001, before October 3rd 2011.

There are exceptions to this deadline, most notably those injured and ill 9/11 Responders and Survivors who have developed Cancer recently and those who have only been recently diagnosed with a 9/11 covered condition. You should review the deadlines document if you have questions.

If you are uncertain if you are registered or not, you can contact the Victim Compensation Fund at 1-855-885-1555 FREE.

There is NO Deadline for medical treatment and/or monitoring from the World Trade Center Health Program.

If you have missed the deadline to Register with the Victim Compensation Fund and have a covered 9/11 illness or injury you can still sign up for the World Trade Center Health Program which was also created by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

The Health Program provides medical monitoring and treatment for 9/11 Responders to not only the World Trade Center but to the Pentagon and the Shanksville PA crash site and medical treatment for injured and ill World Trade Center Responders and has no deadline for signing up. Whether you registered or did not register with the VCF you can still sign up with the World Trade Center Health Program.
