Effort to Create a Monument for Ill and Injured 9/11 Responders and Survivors
With the opening to the public this week of the National September 11th Museum, we wanted to let you know about an effort lead by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, along with the sponsors of the James Zadroga, 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, to establish a Monument for Ill and Injured 9/11 Responders and Survivors.
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer along with U.S. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, U.S. Rep Jerrold Nadler, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, local residents, first responders, organized labor, and other elected officials have created a Committee to work on establishing a monument to 9/11 Responders and Survivors who have been sickened, injured and some dying from their exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.
As Borough President Brewer explained in an Op-ed published today in “City and State”, we know that Responders and Survivors are still suffering– and some still dying–, from the events and aftermath of thirteen years ago.
But, it is sad to say, that many in the nation do not know that.
That is what this committee wants to deal with. No one thinks that the country has forgotten 9/11. Thankfully across the country there are monuments to 911, in small towns and counties and state capitals. Hundreds of pieces of the World Trade Center steel are sprinkled across the country as memorials to those who died that day and now we have the newly opened National September11th Museum.
However, we know that the nation does not fully realize how 9/11 is still effecting not only those who lost loved ones on 9/11 but thousands of responders and survivors who are living with effects of the toxins from Ground Zero to this day and will be for the rest of their lives.
We know that 9/11 is still impacting injured and ill responders and survivors, every week another responder succumbs to a 9/11 cancer but we need to remind the public at large. That is the goal of this committee by working to establish a monument, we can help educate the nation that 9/11 is still impacting injured and ill responders and survivors.
